Hi everyone,

I’m a protected person in Canada, and I’ve been using my work permit (issued June 7, 2023) to study ( I studied two semesters). My work permit is about to expire, and I applied for a study permit last month. My application is still in the background check stage, with no eligibility review yet.

My next semester starts in September, and I’m worried I won’t get my study permit in time. Has anyone experienced this? How long did your study permit take to process after background checks? Any advice on speeding up the process?

Thanks!

You can check processing time so line and call IRCC when you pass the deadline to check on your application

Average Processing Time for Protected Persons:

For protected persons applying for a study permit from inside Canada, the processing time is usually around 2 to 3 months, though it can sometimes be faster or slower depending on various factors.

Factors that Can Affect Processing Time:
  1. Application Completeness: If your application is complete and includes all required documentation (e.g., LOA, proof of protected status, financial documents), it will likely be processed faster.
  2. Current IRCC Workload: The time of year (e.g., peak times before school terms start) or the volume of applications at the IRCC office can influence processing speed.
  3. Your Protected Person Status: Since you’re applying as a protected person, you may not be required to submit certain documents (like a valid passport), which could streamline your process compared to international students. However, IRCC might still request additional documents, which could delay things if they're not immediately available.
  4. Biometrics (if required): If you haven't provided biometrics yet, this can add extra time. Make sure you've submitted all necessary biometrics and checked the validity of those documents.
  5. Additional Information or Security Checks: Depending on your specific case, if IRCC needs further documents or a security check, it can add extra time to the process.
