Hi everyone,

I’m a protected person in Canada, and I’ve been using my work permit (issued June 7, 2023) to study ( I studied two semesters). My work permit is about to expire, and I applied for a study permit last month. My application is still in the background check stage, with no eligibility review yet.

My next semester starts in September, and I’m worried I won’t get my study permit in time. Has anyone experienced this? How long did your study permit take to process after background checks? Any advice on speeding up the process?

Thanks!

Don't see anything wrong. Depending on where you lived then background checks can take months. You cannot speed up the process as it is the other country that may be the issue not IRCC.

OP is a protected person so this would have to be a within Canada application.

But it has only been a month or less than a month because OP doesn't give a date. And we all know that it may say 4 weeks but most are never processed in that timeframe. I was referring to background checks and there is nothing stopping (or in legislation) from IRCC doing background checks even with protected persons. Not common but may happen.

But I started my study using my work permit that was issued to me on June 7, 2023. I studied two semesters using it. I am worried about what will
happen if I don’t get it on time.

Why didn’t you apply for a study permit as required before you started studying? This was not an issue with the school or loan issuer?

It was allowed to use work permit that was issued on and before June 7, 2023. So since my work permit was issued on June 7, 2023 , I used it as a study permit. But now my work permit is about to expire that is why I applied for study permit.

Do you think it is a good idea to ask IRCC?
If I don’t continue my study, it will ruin my schedule. Additionally, since I am receiving a loan, I will have to pay it back if I don’t continue.
Ask IRCC what? You applied a month ago so wait a few weeks.
