Greetings, I am looking for a bit of assistance regarding study permits. I am currently hoping to enter an electrician apprenticeship program through Lakeland College(bit.ly/18VPdIB) in Alberta. I already have a good friend near the college that I would be living with and an employer willing to hire me, but I am a bit confused about the legal portion of this venture. The program includes 8 weeks of school, then 1500 hours of work experience for the rest of the year. It's a four year program, with the first three years functioning as previously described, then the fourth with twelve weeks of school and 1250 hours of experience. I have yet to act on any of this, as I've been unsure what is needed to proceed. I may be completely wrong, but I am under the impression that a study permit only allows for 20(bit.ly/182uku9) hours of work per week and that simply won't meet the 1500 hour requirement... Any advice or clarification would be greatly appreciated, so thank you in advance.

It sounds like your program might qualify as a co-op. See the following link:

I would also check with the school to find out if they have had international students before and what they did in terms of visas/permits.
