Hi everyone,

I need some guidance with my study permit extension application. Due to the long processing times for both study permit (SP) and open work permit (OWP) applications, I was advised to apply for my SP extension first and submit the OWP extension for my spouse separately after my SP is approved.

However, I’m unsure how to answer the following question on my SP extension form:

"Are you accompanying a family member who has status in Canada?"
Accompanying a family member means you will be staying with a family member who is already in Canada as a visitor, worker, or student.

Considering that I’m not applying for my spouse’s OWP extension right now, should I answer "No"?

My spouse has a full-time job and plays a pivotal role in supporting our household financially. He will remain in Canada during the process, but I won’t be submitting his OWP extension with my application.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

This is an incredibly bad idea. Apply for both at the same time.

20 April and SP expire April first

If you don’t apply together your spouse will struggle to extend their work permit if you are about to graduate and haven’t applied for PGWP. You should both apply for extensions now and then apply for PGWP with SOWP once you graduate and have proof of employment.
