Hi there, thanks for reading my thread.

My study permit expires on March 31st, but I'll have finished my last terms/exams in Canada two/three weeks after that.

Is it necessary to apply for an extension? Are there any significant risks to studying for a few extra weeks after the expiry? I will be studying in a different country for my post-grad degree, so it seems rather pointless and expensive to extend the study permit just so that I can finish one week of classes and another week of exams.

Your advice is appreciated, thanks.

1. Apply for the extension, it is a small cost to prevent trouble in the future.

You will have overstayed your permit which means you might need to mention this fact on every future visa application which asks the question "Have you ever overstayed ...." not just for Canada but for everywhere you go.

Thanks for the reply! Do you know where I can find more information about the severity of the penalties?

Oh you're right, I hadn't considered this fact before!

Any further information about possible near-term repercussions is greatly appreciated (even just URLs to where I can read about this stuff in more detail)

Thanks again :)

You will have overstayed and studied illegally, which could affect all future visa applications in any country. Just apply for the extension.
