Hello, I studied in Canada this past year as an international student and my TRV and Study Permit are expiring at the end of summer. I will keep studying in Canada after this year but I’m a little confused about the process. I’m physically in Canada right now but I’ll be leaving Canada next week to go to my home country and I’ll be there for the rest of the summer. Can I apply for a new study permit before my permit expires? Because it will come with a new TRV. If I can, should I be outside of Canada before I can submit my application? Or if I can’t, what steps should I take? Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you continuing with studies in next semester or what are you doing exactly?

If you are continuing or already have a new LOA you should apply for a study permit extension, if you apply in Canada it does not come with new TRV, you have to apply for that after you get a study permit. If you apply from abroad it should come with a new TRV.

Beware you will not be able to travel and enter Canada without a valid TRV and possibly a valid study permit.

If you let your study permit expire and want to apply from within Canada you will need to do a restoration. If it expires and you are out of Canada you apply for a new permit.
