Hello, my fiancé and I are considering a spousal sponsorship route. The issue is we dated in 2018-2019 when I received a departure order from Canada for missing my refugee hearing date because I was in between places. We lost touch and didn’t reconcile until 6 years after I left the country. I just wanted to know what my chances are of getting approved and how to address the long gap in relationship since I was in a rehab for substance abuse. Thank you. I’m from Nigeria if that helps.

No one can tell you your exact chances.

You should address the long gap truthfully. You will want to show strong relationship evidence to show that you are in a relationship again, including several in person visits.

You can expect longer processing times due to your immigration history in Canada. Assume you'll need to go through the ARC process.

You'll need to get married or become common law to be sponsored.

Thanks you. In a case where the countries security climate doesn’t bode well for a visit, is that a bad situation?

We talked to an immigration lawyer and they said the chances were refusal based on general sentiment. I was given a departure order which doesn’t require and ARC but I don’t know if that will affect the outcome considering I’m from a highly scrutinized country.
