Hello my name is Joanna

I have a query with regards to applying for a two year temporary common law partnership work permit in Canada. Our situation is this: My boyfriend is a carpenter and has been offered a job in Vancouver and his two year temporary work permit is all confirmed (our view is to gain permanent residency, eventually) through an agency called Jobs in BC. But, we have hit a bit of a snag. For me to get an open work permit we need proof, on arrival at the airport in Canada, that we have been in a relationship for twelve months or over and have been living together. We have been together for fourteen months now and are very happy. We are living together in the UK but not under our own steam. Due to the current climate of the construction industry things aren't particularly stable and we have been very reluctant to branch out on buying / renting our own property. We have been concerned about my boyfriend's job stability, which was a concern, which became a reality. After working for a reputable company constructing million pound houses for nine months he was reluctantly given his one week's notice due to not being able to afford to keep him any longer. Therefore, we have been living together for twelve months but at my boyfriend's parents' house as opposed to in our own abode. Although we pay rent to them we do not actually have any bills with both of our names on it, we both own separate cellular phones (again, line rental is in parents' names) and we have no joint bank accounts. This is in order to be safe with our savings, we have invested in several different banks to spread the risk of losing all our joint assets. The agency has asked in order for us to prove our relationship we need an Affidavit declaring this and quite possibly documents with both our names on, examples as discussed above. Our plans were to sign a sworn Affidavit to declare we have been cohabiting at my boyfriend's parents' house for the last twelve months, a sworn Affidavit from one of my boyfriend's parents to declare and back this up and we have been on three holidays throughout our fourteen months together and at least one of them will have both our names on dating bwteen Nov 07 - Sept 08. My query is: whether these will suffice for proof of our relationship or whether there is anything anyone can think of which might give further proof. As you can imagine we are a little nervous as we both want to be able to work, although admittedly we do have a few savings put by and my partner's wages will be enough to support us. The problem also is the work permit is decided upon on arrival and if I cannot obtain the open work permit, how long will I be able to reside in the country and are there any other visas I can apply for? I would be very appreciative of any information anyone can give we to ease my anxieties.

Regards

Joanna

I have never heard of anybody having a problem with common law relationship on a temporary work permit. I don't think they go into it as seriously as when you are sponsoring a spouse for PR. I have a couple of friends who have been here with their common law partners. If they do deny you, you have a couple of options, you can marry him :) or you can see if you can get a working holiday visa, http://www.bunac.org/
