Sponsoring U.S wife and minor child

Sorry if this has been asked but ive searched and can only find part of the answer I am getting married to an American woman in the next few months and will be sponsoring her and her minor child to come to Canada. At this time we are not sure if the minor child will actually move to Canada when his mother does as he might stay with his father for the time being. I realize that the minor child needs to be included in the original application along with medical check, If the application is approved for permanent residency for both but he does not come at the same time as his mother is there a time limit on how long can pass without another application?

Yes - there will be a time limit (the child will have to land before the expiry date on the visa if you want to avoid submitting another sponsorship application). The length of time varies from case to case depending on the expiry date of the medicals. At most it will be a year - but it could also be just a few months.

Thanks for the response, that is what I understood but wanted to be sure. We will start the initial process once we are married and apply for him when the time arises.
