While outland is faster, usually, it all depends on the person. The benefit of inland is that you can stay with your spouse without having to deal with things such as visa extensions, even for visa free countries. The drawback is that you cannot appeal the case if they deny you sponsorship. They are both advantages and drawbacks to both approaches that's for sure.

For Japan, I think outland would probably be the better choice, it still takes a while for the process to complete, seems to be kind of in the middle of both extremes (Super fast processing in 5 months or processing that takes over 40 months)

I am sponsoring my Japanese fiance! We sent out our application at the beginning of November. We're doing outland as we currently live in Japan. We are hoping for a quick process but who knows...so far we know our application has made it to Canada at least! It's been signed and accounted for.

canadian sponsoring japanese common law partner here.

sent the outland package while living in canada in nov 2014, got stage one approval in february, got held up after they sent us an email requesting more proof of our common law partnership. sent a few extra photos and documents and got our COPR on dec 24 2015 (a nice christmas present from manila). we're going to be flagpoling together tomorrow morning to officially land her in canada.

getting all the documents together initially was the hardest part for us, as we did it all without an agent. all in all the process ended up taking just over a year and 2 months or so.

how are things going for you now?

any news?

: )
