We now have not only the inconvenience of all this Chinese script on virtually a daily basis (I cannot read it but presume that it has nothing to do with immigration to Canada and that it is simply a deliberate attempt to undermine the usefulness of the site for the rest of us) but also the inconvenience of a much slower response to commands on the website. I assume the two problems are connected: I have a superfast broadband connection and a new computer and usually every command I type is activated virtually instantaneously. Canadavisa is the only site which causes me this problem. I appreciate that the spam is cleared from the forum on a daily basis but it appears likely that that is only done once the working day starts in Canada: no comfort to those of us who try to use the site from Europe or Asia; there the working day starts when most Canadians are fast asleep. There must surely be some way of preventing the misuse of the site before whoever is causing this nuisance gets a chance to spoil the site for the rest of us. I am not a computer expert but wonder whether there is an expert member who can give appropriate advice to the owners of the site as to how to overcome the problem.

I agree it's very frustrating: there are times I log on and there's no spam - obviously been cleared - then days like today when I log on and it's pages of spam.

How do people get accepted onto the forum in the first place - it's been a while since I joined so I forget.

Perhaps, unfortunately, for now the admin need to have tighter control on who is allowed to post without prior evidence of proof of person!

This site has always been slow for me seemingly whether there's been spam or not; I too have high speed and this site by far takes the longest to load pages.

I can only think the people who post the spam garbage are looking for that one person to click on their links. It means nothing for them to keep re-posting and they hope for the curious to click.

Jonesy

and now all the spam is off the website is much faster!

The site needs 24/7 support to address the concerns you have. 24/7 support costs money. This site is free for us to use and all support & hosting costs are covered by the owner.

Unless members of this site are willing to donate money each month towards paying for 24/7 support - I don't think I see that happening.

If you feel strongly about this - you can by all means head up an effort to see if members are willing to donate money and how much money it will take on a monthly basis to secure 24/7 support.

That seems to me to be throwing in the towel too soon. Grateful though I am for the provision of this site by the owner, it is not of much use to me or anyone else when it is not possible to access it. There are times when I cannot access it at all unless I sit and watch the hourglass spinning for minutes on end. When that happens I tend to give up and turn to something else; and if it does not work on a daily basis when I try to access it, there are other sites to turn to: British Expats for example. A site which does not work when Canada is asleep is not going to provide the owner with the good publicity his firm gains from providing the site. Surely you do not think he is providing it purely for charitable reasons? I hope he is reading this and will consider improving the site so that the spammers are defeated 24/7. Is there no way of defeating the spammers by manipulating the software?

There are many ways to prevent spammers from spewing their BS over these forums. I'll do it for free if they let me.

The version of SMF that is running this forum is very old. The version 1 branch is at 1.1.21 and there is also a version 2 branch (2.0.10) available. Spam reduction options are therefore very limited.

SMF is free, isn't it? Why is updating it out of the question? I'm sure that if these spammers are left alone to come in here every day and post their BS, it'll end up costing canadavisa.com a significant amount of wasted bandwidth.
