Hi all. I'm an incoming PhD student and my wife is applying for SOWP to come with me. We finished biometrics in the US on May 12th. My study permit was approved on May 20th, sent my passport and got it back with TRV on June 1st. On June 4th I got the ADR requesting CV for my wife. Will this delay the approval date by much? She has an offer already and we might have to move around the middle of July for her job, but I'm afraid her SOWP won't be approved by then. My wife is Chinese, working in biotech, wonder if that could trigger some deep background check.

Yes this could mean she will end up requiring a comprehensive security screening. It is really out of your control but getting an SOWP by July likely unrealistic.

in the US the processing time for work permit is 4 weeks, though. shouldn't the decision be around july 3rd the latest?

Given that you and/or your wife are not US citizens and also this is no longer standard processing given the CV request it will take longer to process. How long is the big question but it could be much longer. Would always take processing times with a grain of salt they aren’t guaranteed. Your wife’s field of work and education/work history will be a huge factor when it comes to processing times. Many Chinese applicants who are wanting to work or study in fields that could be associated with national security or IP theft can get stuck in background checks for years.
