hey guys hows it going? I haven't been on this forum for quite some time now hope everyone is doing good with their respective sponsorship/pr process, I just have a few questions if anyone can clear some things out for me!

1. in the future, my wife(PR) ,(or we) would like to sponsor her mother from Costa Rica, what are the requirements to do this? is there an income requirement?

2. If my wife or I receive social assistance, and later on we decide to stop receiving social assistance, can we then sponsor her?

3. what is the process of changing my wife's last name to mine? thanks!

1) The parent sponsorship stream was closed to new applications late last year and this freeze is expected to last two years. This means that right now, sponsoring your mother in law is not possible (although you can apply for a super visa which, if approved, would allow her to visit for a prolonged period). When parent applications were being accepted, there was an income requirement for sponsors. Many expect this income requirement will increase once parent sponsorship re-opens in two years. So it's safe to assume there will be some income requirement when parent sponsorships re-open - but impossible to say exactly how much that will be. Your mother in law will also have to pass a medical as part of the application process. The parent sponsorship medical requirements are different than those for sponsal applications in that a parent can be rejected if CIC believes they have health care issues that will create a burden on the Canadian health care system.

But maybe you guys should wait till she acquires Canadian citizenship to simplify things... (Legal change of name isn't possible for PRs in Canada anyway).

It's not? I was planning on waiting for my PR to change mine, it feels silly to take his name when we're not together.
