My partner brought up this subject and it's driving me crazy.
When my partner does his taxation he has to tell his marital status, which is married, but since I don't have a SIN card, how can he prove that?

I am on a visitor visa, Can I apply for a SIN card ? ( on the sin card guide it says that "people who have applied for or received resident status from CIC may apply for SIN)

What about the taxation thingy? Has anyone been through this? I don't want hI'm to get in trouble because of that.

Thank you very much everyone.
I appreciate any help.

Well if you have a permit you can usually get a temporary SIN number and then when you get PR you will receive you permanent SIN number. Until then you can do like I am going to do and get an ITN. You fill out the form and send with the required documents in the mail. You should get it in 4-6 weeks. The ITN aka Individual Tax Number is meant for people who need to file or want to file for a tax return in Canada but do not qualify for a SIN number. You and I both fall under that category. Now when your partner files their return they will state they are married and where it ask for your SIN you will just fill in your ITN in the blank since it works just the same as SIN (well in a sense). As soon as you get a temporary SIN or permanent SIN you should notify CRA and then the next time you file you will fill in the blank with your actual SIN but for now you will have to fill in the blank with a ITN since you don't qualify yet for a SIN. I would work to get the ITN now so that you are ready come tax time.

Here is the link to fill out the ITN form: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t1261/README.html
And they will also want to know your world income so you will need this form as well: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/5013-sa/README.html

I am sure that may be all but if you need help just call up the CRA or visit you local CRA office. They seem to be helpful.
