Hi Everyone,
I got a job offer in CA around 7/4 for 8/8/22. The employer didn't mention the process with IRCC or the Labor Assessment Report. I just sent my working permit application in but I guess it was ridiculous to expect it to be approved prior to my start date. I already put a deposit for housing. What do people normally do? Do they usually have an open permit prior to looking for work or does the employer usually help? I currently live in NYS. Just Curious...

Before applying for a Work Permit, in most cases, you need to qualify for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

However under USMCA, removes the need for a LMIA for all those covered, and eases the entire entry process.
Basic Requirements
  • Must be a citizen of the US or Mexico
  • Must have a job offer in one of the sixty NAFTA occupations
  • Must have the qualifications for the occupation specified in the NAFTA agreement.
So depending on your situation you may not need the LMIA. Otherwise that's a missing piece and the processing times are longer than a month either way.

Does your occupation fall under CUSMA? If so, then you can get a work permit at the border without needing an approved LMIA (and with supporting paperwork from your employer). What's the occupation of your job offer?

How did you get this job? Unfortunately we see a lot of scams when it comes to employment in Canada.
