I thought I'd make a separate post since this question is asked many times by people applying in Jan/Feb/March/April 2018.

If you apply in any of these months, the taxation years you have to list in your application are:
  • 2017: Have you filed your taxes FOR 2017 IN 2018?
  • 2016: Have you filed your taxes FOR 2016 IN 2017?
  • 2015: Have you filed your taxes FOR 2015 IN 2016?
  • 2014: Have you filed your taxes FOR 2014 IN 2015?
  • 2013: Have you filed your taxes FOR 2013 IN 2014?
It is totally OK if you haven't submitted your tax return for 2017 yet, even if you were required to. This is explicitly stated on IRCCs website here:

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/canadian-citizenship/grant/residence/income-tax-filing.html

Quote: "Applicants who submit their application early in the calendar year would not have been required to file taxes yet for the previous calendar year."

Excellent piece of information.

Looks just the way it is supposed to be. Personally (I am also an early 2018 applicant), I also added a one line explanation on a separate sheet that I will of course file my taxes by the deadline but that I'm waiting on tax slips.

But I think even without that explanation, one should be fine since the IRCC website clearly states that it is ok not to have filed for 2017 (see quote above).

@spyfy and all: I just mailed my application today and then realized that I included years 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and haven't mentioned 2017. Please not that I've filed taxes for ALL these years above but genuinely forgot to mention about 2017. Would you by any chance know that this would be considered as a critical error? Appreciate it. Thanks!

No one can tell, we aren't IRCC officers. I don't think it's a big deal personally.

I would highly recommend to simply forget about your application until you receive AOR. There is no point in worrying now.

I am also in the same boat that I did not check off any of the boxes for 2017, but check off "yes" boxes for all previous years. I hope my application doesnot get returned due to that.

Personally, I did not write any explanation. But its a good idea.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at submitting my application later this month but have some doubts as I'm using pre-PR time.

Background:

Study/Work permit (Aug 2007 - Jan 2016)
PR (Jan 2016 - Present)

Taxes:

2017
Required to File - Yes
Taxes Filed - No

2016
Required to File - Yes
Taxes Filed - Yes

2015
Required to File - Yes
Taxes Filed - Yes

2014
Required to File - Yes
Taxes Filed - Yes

2013
Required to File - Yes
Taxes Filed - Yes

I've essentially been filing my taxes since 2007. Do any of you think (in my unique case) that I should wait to file my 2017 taxes before applying?

Cheers,
tc23

There's nothing sneaky or tricky about the tax filing requirements. It doesn't matter if you were PR or temporary worker. You have to file taxes for 3 out of the 5 years prior to your application. Any 3 out of 5. Either you have done this, or you have not done this.

If you have done this, your application will be fine.

If you have not done this, your application will not be fine.

This is incorrect. You don't have to have filed three tax returns. You only need to comply with tax rules for three years. So if in a year you truthfully put required NO filed NO, such a year counts as one of the three years. That is in fact the whole point of the "required" column.
