Hi Friends:

One of my friends recently got his COPR and is planning to travel in October.

Next month he's getting married to a Canadian Citizen.

Will he need to inform CIC? Will that not cancel his COPR?

There's no need to inform cic of this.
Your friends new wife will not need anything from cic as she's already a citizen. Let him marry her and travel whenever he wants.

Incorrect advise. He should report his marriage because of change change in family, even if spouse is Canadian Citizen.

The reason is that along with COPR, a letter is sent that advise to report in change in family, birth etc. He should report marriage with Marriage Certificate and Canadian Citizenship papers of spouse.

Some time, while landing CIC officer can ask that if there has been changes to your family or if you are married now. At that time, if a person says no then he's lying and if person says Yes then landing can be in trouble. On the spot, you go on explaining that I am married to a Canadian Citizen and then you are at discretion of CIC officer to complete landing or not. Be safe and inform CIC of marriage. There will not be delay in your landing, as you would not require to sponsor your spouse later on.

Check this out: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/provincial/next_steps.asp

Copied from that page, under "Changes to your application: how to contact CIC after you apply"

To avoid processing delays, tell CIC about changes to your personal information as soon as possible.

You must let us know if:

a province or territory withdraws your nomination,
you do not plan to live in the province or territory that is nominating you,
your family composition changes (for example, birth or adoption of a child, marriage, divorce, etc.),
your mailing address or email address changes,
you change your immigration representative, or
you want to withdraw your application.

When you submit your application to CIC, we will send you a letter with instructions about how to contact us if there are changes to your situation.

Best is for your friend to inform CIC of his change in family composition through marriage as instructed.
Leave the response to CIC.
If he getss married and tries to land without informing CIC, he will have problems

Change of marital status need to be reported in my opinion.

This is quite a serious change, although it does not have any impact on CORP and can not invalidate in any way.

When my parents immigrated a while ago under family class (parents immigration), while landing CIC officer asked my parents to answer below questions and I was asked by CIC officer not to answer on my parents behalf:
1. Do you have any dependent children?
2. Have you adopted any children?
3. Is there a divorce or marriage after you filed your immigration papers?

I have also heard that CIC asks such questions on landing. For a single person, they can ask if you have children or if you have been married after filing for immigration. If OP's friend answers it truthfully then answer would be yes married to a Canadian Citizen. OP's friend can be asked for proof and it is not worth it to get into discussion with CIC officer during landing and the discussion on not reporting marriage prior to landing. Keep things simple and safe. Inform CIC about marriage with Marriage certificate and proof of Canadian citizenship. That is it? No need for any other action, as he is not sponsoring his spouse later on because spouse is a Canadian citizen.

It is better to land first and then get married. It will save from some headache about reporting to CIC.

You should inform CIC through case specific enquiry as well as contact your local visa office.
This will
1. give you a definite proof that you have done your part to inform CIC through CSE
2. Update COPR document.
