Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice for a friend who is a Canadian Citizen (originally came as a student and got citizenship after 7 years). He is getting married in India in 5 months (arranged marriage).

He recently lost his job and is currently on EI (Employment Insurance). We have a few concerns about the sponsorship process:

  1. Income Requirements: We know there is no LICO (minimum income) for spousal sponsorship, but he has very little savings in his bank account right now. Will IRCC reject the application because he is currently unemployed/on EI?
  2. EI and Travel: He knows his EI will stop when he leaves for the wedding. Does he need to have a job before he submits the sponsorship application, or can he submit it while looking for work?
Has anyone been in a similar situation where the sponsor was unemployed or on EI? How did you prove "financial stability" to IRCC without a high bank balance?

Thanks in advance for the help!
