Sending FBI Certificate in separately - procedure?

Hi all!

We sent in my common-law spouse's application in May and we haven't received AOR yet (which is normal), but we just received his FBI certificate in the mail and we need to send it in. We don't have an application or case number and I'm concerned about sending it in and it getting lost in the piles of applications.

For those of you who sent your police certificate separately, how did you do so? Should I open the letter from the FBI or will it be considered invalid if the seal is broken? Should I add a cover letter just with our information? Should I wait until we are assigned an application number (which, I imagine happens after AOR?)?

2. You are going to have to wait until your have a file no. to send it. Then it will be older than 3 months, so your spouse will require another FBI certificate.

you can certainly open the FBI letter. It will not make it invalid. Sending a copy will as the paper is watermarked. When you receive your SA, the letter will instruct you how to send the pcc to the visa office. It's best to wait until then, because it will need to go there, not mississauga. If the record is subject to be beyond 3 months when you receive sa, it's suggested to apply for a new one asap so it can be timed correctly. It's about 30 days to get one right now, so it might be worth it to have a back up.

beeelythe - this will be your main issue. You must wait for sponsor approval and the application to get transferred to the visa office. At that time you will get a file number. Only at that time can you then mail it to the visa office (file no. is how they match up any documents you send it later with your application).

Thank you for the helpful (at least, mostly) information.

We are hoping to receive AOR in the next couple of weeks (according to the timelines on the CIC website). So, no, PMM, it will not be expired by then, being as it was issued in the last week, which definitely puts it under the three month limit. I understand you are a VIP member and have lots of information to share, but there is really no reason to be smug or condescending about sharing it. Do not be the bad apple that ruins the bunch.

I have read the checklist countless times, but I have also found that several users on this forum have confirmed different information that slightly strays from that provided by CIC. For example, on the website it states that only people living in countries outside of Canada may apply outland, even though that is not the case. I like to take the extra precaution to verify information here before making a move and I certainly don't believe I should be shamed for doing so.

rcohen, I like your idea of applying for another one, though. I never want to take any timelines for granted so I think we'll wait a couple of weeks and order another backup, just to be on the safe side. Thanks for the tip!
