Hi everyone,

I received my first Spouse Open Work Permit (SOWP) in August 2024 under the inland spousal sponsorship program in Canada, and it is valid until August 2026.

My PR application is still in process and I have not received approval from IRCC yet. Since my current SOWP will expire soon, I would like to ask:

  • Am I eligible to apply for a second extension of my Spouse Open Work Permit while waiting for PR approval?
  • Has anyone been in a similar situation before?
  • What documents did you submit for the extension?

Thank you very much for your advice and experience.

Hi,

You can apply for extension as you normally do for SO Work Permit.
It needs similar documents you submitted during initial SOWP, as for SOWP you dont need job letter or paystubs, but if you have them do attach them along with your AOR>
I had to go through similar process for my partner as we were in the same boat as you. Though the SOWP approval took the same time as regular SOWP. Currently its 209 days. You might receive your eCOPR in the next few month, but yes extending SOWP is an option.

Hi,

Thank you so much for your helpful reply and for sharing your experience.

It’s really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same situation successfully. Your explanation about the documents and the extension process is very valuable to me.

I truly appreciate your advice and kindness. Hopefully my PR process will also be finalized soon, but it gives me peace of mind knowing that extending the SOWP is possible if needed.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me.
