It’s high time IRCC scrap the oath ceremony. It’s completely pointless and an utter waste of time for both the applicant and IRCC.
FYI - IRCC can't change it. They don't have the authority.

Changes to citizenship act require a bill to be approved through the Parliament of Canada. There are multiple steps to this process, including readings and voting. The bill would need to be put forward and supported by one party and then have sufficient support within other representative parties to pass.

Looks like they are thinking about something similar

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2022/01/modernizing-canadas-immigration-system-to-support-economic-recovery-and-improve-client-experience.html

We are continuing to expand the use of virtual ceremonies. Moving forward, we are exploring an option for those who wish to self-administer their Oath by signed attestation, and celebrate their citizenship at a later date. This would shorten the waiting time for those at the final stage of their citizenship process.

I don't think so. Why would the Citizenship Act would have to be changed? The act does not have a requirement for an oath ceremony. All it says is that a person must make the oath, and, in principle, that can be done in writing.

Not sure if there would be any significant gains from cancelling the oath ceremony. It serves as great optics for Canada and has a strong feel-good factor to it. Highly unlikely that removing it would result in any back end efficiencies. IRCC needs better integration with the other services they rely on - RCMP, CSIS, CBSA etc etc. On the other hand, perhaps everyone has to acknowledge that part of the delays is due to a deeper scrutiny of all applications. No points for guessing why this scrutiny is/was required.

I think its nice to have oath, cz that's the final recognition of what we went through in this country (in my case came here as a student, then on a work permit, gained canadian experience, then permanent resident, and three years later, went through the struggle of this citizenship application) to attain the citizenship. So it's an honor to attend that ceremony and take the oath, and say to myself that " I DID IT".

Again that's my opinion. Some people think differently.

I totally agree. Most times the delay are cause by other govt agencies like RCMP and the rest. I believe IRCC also need to increase workforce and reassess their procedure. There are certain stages in every application that can be waived. If someone, have lived for certain periods in Canada and hasn't make international travel, waiting for security agencies clearance like RCMP can be waived. In short a provincial police certificate could be an alternative.

I agree the ceremony is important for people to celebrate this achievement. I can see how much it means to many people, would make more sense if IRCC keep ceremonies but not make gaining the citizenship contingent on the ceremony taking place. Ceremonies can be done after the process is completed, instead of being part of the process

I totally agree with you

The person who started thread is being disrespectful. A guy does not even try to adopt Canadian culture and traditions. Soon cry babies will try to cancell test and then BG check and everything.

If somebody does not like something, there are other countries on the planet where there is no oath.

Nonsense. Especially when the minister for immigration is already considering the idea that people simply sign a form and get on with things.
