Saskatchewan ID Renewal – Expired PR Card and COPR, Proof of Status Question

Hello everyone,


I’m currently living in Saskatchewan and my Saskatchewan ID (non-driver ID) will expire in July 2026.
My PR card has expired, and my Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document is also past its validity date.


Due to some personal reasons, I am not planning to renew my PR card at this moment, but I still hold Permanent Resident status and live in Saskatchewan.


I currently have the following valid documents:

• Saskatchewan Health Card (active and eligible)
• Utility bill, bank statement, and lease agreement (for proof of address)
• Azerbaijan passport
• Existing Saskatchewan ID (expiring July 2026)

According to SGI’s Establishing Identity requirements, one of the necessary documents is Proof of Legal Status in Canada.
Since my PR card and COPR are expired, I’m wondering what SGI would accept in this case.


Has anyone renewed their Saskatchewan ID in a similar situation — where the PR card was expired, but the person still resides legally in the province?

Every document has its expiry date. Except SIN.

i think the copr would work, but was wondering why you do not just simply renew PR Card? it won't take too long to get a new one.

COPR has an expiry date and doesn’t confirm longterm PR status so wouldn’t probably work.

when my cards expired, I went to SGi, they renewed it.

If you have proof that you have been living in Canada and haven’t renewed your PR card that is typically fine. You don’t need a valid PR card to live in Canada. Many never leave Canada so haven’t felt the need to renew their PR card. There also lack of consistency between provincial office locations and most employees have very little knowledge of immigration so some people just get lucky and aren’t asked any questions.

Hello Efgan,

You are still considered a Permanent Resident of Canada despite having an expired PR Card/COPR, because it’s just a travel document and not a proof of status. However, SGI will need to verify your status through valid IRCC documents to show "Entitled to be in Canada." Most frontline issuers will refuse your expired PR card or COPR.

Your Options:
Get Verification of Status (VOS) You could get a verification of your PR status in the form of IMM 5008 from IRCC. This is an official document used to prove PR status without a full renewal of PR Card, and an unexpired VOS will be accepted by SGI.
Reapply for your PR Card A PR Card reapplication ($50 fee) will provide you with IRCC Confirmation of Receipt/Application Number. Some issuer managers at SGI would be willing to accept it along with your expired card while your application is being processed.

Next step: Contact SGI Customer Service at 1-844-855-2744 or visit a local Motor Licence Issuer. Explain that you are a continuous resident with an active SK Health Card, and whether they want the VOS document for your ID renewal
