I overstayed in Canada over Covid. I left over a year ago and want to return for a short visit by air. Will I be given a hard time at customs or do I have nothing to worry about?

It is possible since you overstayed. Were you asked to leave the country? CBSA can give you a hard time or deny you entry. You will not know until you enter.

I never received anything asking me to leave the country is there any way of making sure I won’t be denied entry before I leave?

No. If you have a valid visa then you enter and see what happens.

In your experience would it be worth a shot or a stupid idea to try and go back? Also I don’t need a visa if I have a us passport right?

You do not need a visa but CBSA will have a record of your overstay. Do not lie and be honest if asked about overstay.
