If the absence happens to be on the first day of the relevant 4 year period but it had actually started earlier than that day. For example, applicant qualifies 2015-01-15 but on 2011-01-15 while a PR, he/she was away starting 2010-12-15. I noticed the calculator disregards the days before the fist day of the relevant 4 year period but what to report as the starting day of the absence on the residence calculator? 2011-01-15 or 2010-12-15?

Either one would be fine but , to be more accurate, I would report the day the absence started even if it is out of the 4 year window and let the calculator do the math.

Logically the first day of absence should be the actual first day of absence, i.e. 2010-12-15.

Your first day of absence is not 2011-01-15 so why would you put that even though it is the first day of your 4-year period? Putting 2011-01-15 in your example as the first day of absence will be wrong and misleading.

The calculator gives a warning message saying you entered dates outside of the 4 year period, that's why.

Does it just give a warning and still let you keep that date or does it not allow you to keep that date?

If the latter, then I would call the call center and ask for their input on how to handle this.

No you can keep the dates and in the the final page it will show the actual date you inputted and disregards the number of days before the first day when calculating absence. So only issue (not really an issue) is the waring message.

when CIC has asked for only 4 year relevant period then why do you need to provide data before that?

Example:

Your first day in Canada as PR is 2011-01-01 and your eligibility date is 2015-01-01.
If you were absent from Canada from 2010-12-15 to 2011-01-15 then mention 2011-01-01 to 2011-01-15.

CIC only considers 4 year relevant period and they don't care about previous days.

I hope it helps and makes sense.

No, first day as PR is BEFORE 2011-01-01

Assume the following:

PR on 2010-11-01
Left 2010-12-15
Returned 2012-01-01
Eligible to apply 2015-01-01

Now period to account for starts 2011-01-01 (out of country while PR).

I think like others mentioned, entering the actual start date of the trip makes the most sense. The calculator will show you left that day but it will count absence starting on the first day of the relevant 4 year period. Absence from 2010-12-15 to 2012-01-01 will show 365 days absent, not 380.

I am not too sure however, please try the online residence calculator for accurate information.
