Yes, you can, I did this myself. It is actually a good idea to do this because the processing takes 3-4 months. If you are already planning to travel, tell them your travel dates so they can try to have your card ready by then.

The question to ask though is: Will you meet the residency requirement of 730 days if you apply 3-4 months before your card expires?

The residency requirement is actually that you can't have been outside Canada more than 1095 days so if you haven't and you are in Canada, they can't deny you a new PR card based on that you don't meet the residency requirements if you still can.

Because you tell them on your application form when you apply for a travel document or renew your PR. If you feel tempted to lie on your application, keep in mind that you don't know what information they have access to. They share information for example with the US border so if you lie, they might just find out.

WHy does it take 3-4months to renew the PR card when it takes 30 days more or less to issue the first card when the permanent resident lands in Canada the first time?

Probably because when you are getting a PR card for the first time, they don't have to verify that you meet the residency requirements. They may also assume that you have a bigger priority to get your first PR card since you may need it at times to prove your status in Canada. Somebody who is already in Canada will have those things set up already as well as can apply to renew 3-4 months before his current card expires.

Quoting the CIC website:

"Please note: Due to an extraordinary circumstance related to our electronic scanning system, PR card processing times have increased significantly. We are working quickly to fix this problem and apologize for any inconvenience it causes. Once the technical issues have been resolved, we will make every effort to clear the backlog of files and reduce processing times."

I really hope processing time reduces in the nearest future :-[

Hi All,

I would like to know about the PR card renewal process. Can husband PR card be renewed on basis of spouse if she is living in Canada for 730 days and husband somehow not able to make the 730 days.

Also pls suggest if entry in Canada can be made near the PR expiration date then will the stay in Canada be considered legal even after the PR card expiration and what would be the prospects of PR card renewal in that case?

Please help and suggest. Thanks !!
