I have a question.
My friend's OHIP card is expired in 2016, she is not in Canada. She is taking care of her mother ( who is ill) in another country . In order to renew her OHIP should she stay in Canada for 3 months? Taking into consideration that her mother is still ill and my friend cannot stay in canada long.
Is there any exception? To make the process of renewing short?
Because of force situation she is in.
The answer specially if positive is appreciated?

Once your friend returns to Canada, she will need to live in Canada for three months before her OHIP coverage is reinstated. She should purchase private health care insurance to cover herself for emergencies during the first three months she is in Canada.

As mentioned above, the 3 month waiting period applies to everyone. Since she's been outside Canada for so long she will need to wait 3 months upon returning before she's eligible for coverage.

Also, during the first 6 months upon returning she can't leave Ontario for more than 1 month during this time else her OHIP would be cancelled, and need to go through the 3 month waiting period again.

She can always just call OHIP and ask them directly as well.

Thank you for your kind answers.
Considering the fact that her mother is ill and that was the reason of her not being in Canada . Even if she shows and delivers all necessary focuments proving this , will it make any change in the process.
Because the first problem is that the card is expired for around one year. And she will go Canada to renee it. But the period of 3 months is not possible because of her mother's health situation.
Is there anything could be done any exception they can make?

I myself tried to contact OHIP today, but no answer. Just recorded voice.
How can she talk to somebody who is in charge and get a teliable feedback.

Reliable answer before her trip to canada?
She should prepare to wait 3 months, and not leave Canada for at least 6 months. So she better buy private travel emergency medical coverage in the meantime for at least 3 months.
She can talk to OHIP directly in person when she gets to Ontario.

IF she doesn't like the decision she can appeal it to OERC, but doubtful it would be successful.

If she is coming to Canada temporarily only to leave again there is no point renewing her OHIP card. She needs to be back in the country on a permanent basis before the 3 months starts.
