I currently live in the US and don't have plan to move back to Canada for another year. My PR card expires in 4 months, but according to the law I must be in Canada to renew it. I have lived in Canada for 4 out of the last 5 years. According to CIC, I can apply for travel document from VISA office in US, and travel back to Canada without a PR card as long as I meet the residency obligation, but I would rather renew the PR card before it expires.

Do you think I can ask friends and family who live in Canada to mail the application package on my behalf from inside Canada?

If not, can I travel back to Canada, send the renewal package and come back to the US while I am waiting for CIC to process the application, and ask friend and family to mail the card to me when they receive it?

The second option seem silly but if it works I am willing to travel. Has any one been in the same situation?

Thanks in advance.

According to me it is not a good idea.

As long as you have met the residential obligation, you could do that. Who knows CIC will ask you to collect the card personally from the local office, once it is ready?. If it is so, you can enter with your COPR copy, by road in private car. However, there could possibly some questions at the border, if your card is expired, but it won't hurt you any way.
