Can someone help me with the adress where we send the RTD application??? My friend sent one on 31st march and call center agent keep saying the application is not yet in the system and they keep asking to send a new one … and it is super urgent to travel
It’s the Certificate of Identity Section in Ottawa, K1A 1L1 if sent through courier. I sent my application by courier (UPS) on April 8th and they had it in their system by April 16th. Did they sent it through mail or courier? I’ve heard that when sent by mail I.e to their mailing box, it takes a lot time to reach them while if you courier it, it gets handed to them directly.

The address is on the application form at the very back.

I recently travelled to Thailand with my RTD and the process was smooth.

I wish to travel to Bali Indonesia and Vietnam, but I'm unsure if they would issue a visa on RTD. I'm an Afghan national.

Has anyone been to these countries?

For Indonesia they issue visa on rtd but not from the consulate or embassy. You need to find a guarantor. Usually travel agencies in Indonesia I believe.

I did contact one. They said since Afghan nationality is a special case, it would cost in thousands to get a Visa :/

Likely because Indonesia hosts many Afghan citizens trying to seek asylum hoping for resettlement in another country. Although you have been granted asylum in Canada there is likely concern that granting visas may act like a draw for things like family members hoping to eventually reunite with family members already settled in other countries.

Damn unfortunate. What about Malaysia? My research tells me that there is visa exemption even on RTD, but I'm unsure if that's true

Hey!! I’m planning a trip to Thailand on my RTD as well. Can you let me know how long it took you to get the visa and whether the process was okay? Also, what airline did you fly with and was there a transit visa you had to get?

Got it — I’ll act as a Canadian immigration officer and provide information accordingly. Please go ahead with your question or situation. Are you asking about work permits, study visas, permanent residency (PR), Express Entry, family sponsorship, or something else?

The refugee traveled document has a type on the main page. In 2023 type=P in 2025 type =pr. What's meaning of that?

Great question. As a Canadian immigration officer, here’s what the difference between Type = P and Type = PR means on a Refugee Travel Document (RTD):

1. Type = P

  • This is the most common type.
  • It stands for "Protected Person".
  • It means the holder is a convention refugee or protected person under Canadian immigration law.
  • This person does not have permanent resident (PR) status yet, but is allowed to remain in Canada and has protected status.

2. Type = PR

  • This means the person is now a Permanent Resident.
  • Specifically, it means the protected person has been granted PR status.
  • The travel document still shows they are a refugee, but now they also have the rights and obligations of a PR in Canada.
  • It's a stronger status and may lead to Canadian citizenship later on.

Summary:

TypeMeaningStatus
PProtected Person (not PR yet)Temporary / Pending PR
PRProtected Person who became a Permanent ResidentPermanent Status
If you recently renewed your travel document and noticed the change, it means you were granted PR between 2023 and 2025, and your document now reflects that.
