hello everyone,

I have question... My refugee claim was denied and I got married and applied for inland sponsorship.
I got First stage approval and got my medical done, criminal record check done in Canada, It got my passport from CBSA and it was expired, I went to consulate general of India to apply my passport they accepted my application it's been 6 months I didn't receive my passport, will Indian embassy will renew my passport ? If not how should I get my passport? Because CIC asked for renewed passport. Or what other option I have to get PR.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

For passport renewal, a new passport is issued if the previous short validity passport has expired.... the passport validity in this case is extended to the maximum of 10 years.... it will have the same passport number as before.

In case of passport re-issue, a new passport is issued with 10-year validity.

You probably mean passport re-issue in your case.... timelines for passport re-issue (ie after it has crossed the 10-year validity).... depend on where your previous passport was issued including in which country, which city you have now submitted your application, your visa status in Canada presently, etc

Maybe they are doing a police verification, in India, for passport re-issue in your case.... police verification may/may not be necessary for passport re-issue, and the decision to do a police verification for re-issue depends on the passport issuing authority.

The BLS website shows that normal re-issue of passports are taking an estimated 2 months for Ottawa/Vancouver, and 4-6 weeks for Toronto

Hi bryanna

My passport was issued in Mumbai city in India, I called in India and verified that all the police verification is done and my passport was expired in 2012, and I appled for renewal in 2014. VCGI said there is no set time frame, I was just wondering what if I don't get my passport , what other option I have to tell CIC to complete my case. Will Indian embassy will give me my passport? Because as once I applied for refugee, will that going to effect on my passport.

Thanks again

Have you confirmed whether the police verification was done AFTER you submitted your application for passport re-issue in 2014?

If no then is it possible to enquire at the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai and the local police station (as per your passport address) whether they have received any requests for police verification in your case? And, get a copy of the police report.

Also, can you enquire with the Indian Embassy about the status of your passport application? Maybe you can request for a travel document with a shorter validity (just to get a valid passport to start with) instead of for 10 years?

You are an Indian national.... they will issue you a passport at some point because you have not surrendered your Indian citizenship.... maybe your application for refugee is delaying matters because they might have to do additional checks (not sure, I'm guessing)

Thank you bryanna,

Yes police verification was done after I applied for passport, the police officer said that every thing from our side is good ... They said You have to enquire in Canada about your passport ... Police report was done in February 2015. My medical is going to expire in around end of July 2015 .. I'm so nervous that what if my passport i don't get it . What other options I have to get my PR finalize.

Thank you again, every time you reply it gives my hopes up. I really appreciate it.

You're welcome :)

The fact that the Indian Embassy has processed your passport application.... they had forwarded a police verification request to Mumbai police.... the latter has given a positive/clean police report.... this means things are on the right track for you

February 2015 is quite recent.... if I am not mistaken the police report will be sent first to the Passport Office in Mumbai.... from there, it will be forwarded to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi.... and then to the Indian Embassy in Canada

Now we know that work does not happen at lightening speed in India.... it's mostly at snail's pace :)

My advice is to enquire with the Indian Embassy.... they may be able to advise you about the status.... and you can then take it from there

The police report is clear (which is essential for a passport, although not necessary for a re-issue)..... so it's just a matter of time.... hopefully you'll get your passport soon

Thanks again bryanna, :)

I emailed so may times to Indian embassy, they don't reply to my email and try to call them there is a message says call BLS for passport enquiry. It's so hard to get updated from Indian embassy. I will try again emailing them... I can't even go there by person because Indian embassy is 500kms from my house.. I wish Indian embassy have a better system to improve the service.

Thank you for all your time and feedback .. I appreciate your time. Have a nice day. :)

Another suggestion that I can think of:
a. You can ask the Office of the Commissioner of Police for the date when the police report was sent to the Passport Office.... if they have not sent it as yet then someone you know will have to get it sorted, and secondly

b. You can give an authorization letter to someone who can visit the Mumbai Passport Office..... to enquire about what happens next and when.... I'm quite sure that they will forward the report to the MEA, New Delhi.... you can mention that you need the passport urgently

However, it will not be possible for you to check the status at the MEA.... but at least from the above two actions, hopefully you will know where matters stand

All the best :)

That's a great suggestion, I will follow that and see what they have to say... Regarding my passport process. When I will get the report i will try to contact Indian embassy and attach the report to follow up...

Thank you and God bless you. :)
