Hi everyone,

I have a couple of questions:

1) My current study permit expires on March 30, 2015 but my Post-Graduate program finishes in December 2014(it was a one year program with co-op). Can I stay in Canada for those 3 months (Jan to March 2015) even if I am not enrolled in any program?
2) I plan to do another 1 year Post-Graduate program that starts in May 2014. For this will I have to apply for 'Extending my study permit' or apply for a new study permit altogether?

I have tried looking up CIC and similar websites but have not been able to get any satisfactory answers. Plus I have not been able to find any contact points with them where I can put forward my query. It would be great if someone can answer my questions or point me in the right directions. Thank you.

Thank you J5M. I am also seeing a lawyer over the weekend to know exactly what I need to do for extending my study permit. I do have the full amount of fees for the next program but am a bit stumped if I have to show proof of funds for accommodation and such because I was planning to pay it off by continuing my current part time work. Do you have any idea how much proof of funds for accommodation I have to show if any? For my current study permit that I applied from India I bought the GIC bonds worth CAD 10k in addition to paying my program fees. Will I have to do that again to get extension of my study permit?

Thank you again for your reply.

Do you really need a lawyer, its so simple process, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-student.asp

1. Download application (on Internet Explorer) http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/forms/IMM5709E.pdf enter your UCI as mentioned on your first permit.
2. You will have to show 1st year tuition + CAD 10,000 in your bank a/c. GIC is not required. Apply online.

Yeah. I dint think I need one too, but just wanted to confirm the things you just answered.

Thank you for the replies. Since my program is a 1 year program (3 semester - 2 in-class and 1 co-op) I was thinking of paying the 1st semester fees(7.5k) and show around 10k as balance in my Canadian bank account. Would that be fine? Plus, do I have to show the bank balance for a period of 4 months?

I am sorry if this sounds noobish but I am looking to confirm things before I apply as I do not want it to get rejected.

Plus I just heard from a few people today that the PGWP is going to have some sweeping changes in Jan 2015 and that for no matter what amount of time you study (1 to 3 years), you will get only a 1 year PGWP. That is what basically spooked me into getting an appointment with a lawyer who I must say charges pretty steep for a single session.

P.S. I removed your links from the quotes because I got an error saying 'You are not allowed to post links'

1. 1st year or semester tuition is enough, depend on school's tuition policy.
2. Baseless rumors. However, you won't get 2nd PGWP since you already have one. It's once in a lifetime.

Thank you J5M. This surely made me relax quite a bit.

I do not have a PGWP at the moment. I came to Toronto on Dec 2013 on a study permit for my current 1 year program. Now I will be doing another 1 year program and then apply for PGWP. I hope to get something between 2 to 3 years PGWP based on my understanding of the guidelines of CIC. Although, after reading a bunch of stuff online I am not sure if I would be eligible for upto 3 years PGWP.
