Questions: Mailing in passport, PR entry timing

Dear all:

I am planning to apply for PR through my spouse (Canadian citizen). We both live in Europe at the moment where I work. I soon may have to go on assignment in Asia for 6-12 months.

I will send off the application soon. My question is, if my PR application is in process and we go to another country -- when I need to mail in my passport is it ok to do it from a 3rd country/have it mailed back to a 3rd country? Or does it need to be from the country that I applied from (and then could ask a friend to forward on to me?).

A second question: assuming I am approved for PR - how long do we have to enter/remain in Canada? Of course, we plan to settle down there, but moving is a lengthy process and wrapping things up could take quite some time. Is it possible to enter Canada to "activate" PR, then leave and return later (6 months?). I have read that as long as I am traveling with my wife who is a citizen this counts as time "in country."

you would have to send it where they ask you to send it... keep in mind that if you live in a country for 6 months or more, you MUST provide a police certificate for that country and all others that you have lived in...

timing depends -- they will tell you when you have to land by, you can do a soft landing, but you will need your PR card when you return and that takes 6-8 weeks to receive

Thank you for your reply. But when they return my passport could they mail it to an outside country if I include a pre-paid label or something, or only to the address I list on my form when I apply? I know about the 6 month rule for a police certificate which is why I am getting this done ASAP before I get sent on assignment (still several months away...)

And for PR card - this will get sent to my Canadian address - assuming this is a relative, could they just mail it to us abroad?
