Hello I use turbo tax too .. I was married feb 2012 in mexico my husband is still in mexico
I live in Ontario but i think this should be the same for all of canada.. this is what I have been working on before I send in my taxes might be helpful for someone else. I have heard nightmares from people who had to send in proof after the fact and had their returns held and even previous years audited.
There is a form online you can print and fax to request a change of marital status apparently you are supposed to do this right after your status changes (married, common law, divorced or whatever your status change is) in my case married I had to sign it and my husband as well then I faxed it in. Apparently this helps because when they pull up your income tax they already have record of your being married.
The next thing I did was sign up for “My account” you can also change your marital status right though their website and put in your spouse’s name. At the same time I switched my account to be direct deposit so I can get my return more conveniently
Lastly, I have prepared a package including a letter explaining my situation along with a copy of our Mexican wedding certificate and a translation into English. A copy of the fax I sent them and copies of documents as proof of our family sponsorship/PR case. I plan to send it off this weekend.
Good luck everyone! If anyone can think of anything else I could do please let me know
