Hello guys! I landed at the Edmonton office last June 24, 2014. That time the lady who spoke to all the people who are landing said that we cannot apply for Permanent SIN until we get our PR CARDS.

My question is... are there any other people here who landed in Edmonton office and was able get permanent SIN using the COPR only?

By the way, I'm on my 7th week of waiting for my PR card..

Thanks for the response!

I read something on the service canada website just a week or so ago, they changed the rules so you can now get your SIN with only your COPR and your passport/identity document. Go ahead and go to your local service canada with that and you should be fine now.

in ontario this isn't true... all service canada needs is the passport and COPR document. i would recommend going to the local office and hearing from the horse's mouth whether or not you can get the SIN#. my guess is the CBSA agent doesn't know what she's talking about since she doesn't work for CRA or Service Canada.

I can't imagine Alberta would be any different, especially since they are more lenient on things like provencial health coverage....

Not in Alberta, but Ontario, yes. It is done through Service Canada, not at the provincial level, so I don't understand why it would be different in each province.

Good luck. Hopefully you don't have to wait for the PR card because they are taking quite a while now.

Service Canada is for SIN, which is country wide, not provincial so it shouldn't matter which province you are in.

Based on others experiences... those that applied outland and got PR via landing at a land border or airport, can go immediately to get a SIN with COPR/passport.

However those that landed inland at a local CIC office, are rejected from SIN office with COPR/passport and need to wait for actual PR card. I guess the 2 are different, but no idea why.

If someone applied inland though they should still have a valid SIN via their OWP they got after stage 1 approval, so just continue to work on that until you get a new permanent SIN.

huh, that's interesting. i wonder how they know the difference between an inland COPR and an outland COPR? i assume all COPRs look the same? perhaps they don't...

I agree. Strange. Maybe it is because the inland applicants already have heirs and can work and so they want to focus on those who are applying for a sin for the first time? Although that shouldn't matter either because you don't need a sin card to work. You just need the number and paper work, which you get immediately upon applying....

They have just recently, as in the last month or less, changed the rules so that inland/outland are no longer treated differently. Modifications made to this page on July 18, 2014 ... http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sin/apply/proof.shtml#supporting_documents

Me and my son went to service Canada at Canada place in Edmonton this afternoon and got our permanent SIN.

And yes, we just showed our COPR and passport. The very helpful lady said that they changed their rules last month (July) because she said there is no point of waiting for the PR CARD. The passport that has immigration stamp and the copr are enough proof already that one has landed as PR.

DONE!

Woot woot!

My husband landed last July, got his SIN the next day. About a month or so later received the card in the mail. Has it changed then? No more physical SIN cards?

last july as in 2014 or 2013? im not sure when it changed, but no more SIN cards seem to be consistant with what newly landed pr's report.
