If my son is a Canadian citizen, does this in anyway give me a faster route to getting citizenship myself?

What about a 2nd cousin?

Toying with the idea of returning to Canada...

Are you a PR already? Regardless, there is no faster way to citizenship, you have to meet the minimum requirements to apply i.e. residency, intent to reside, etc.

If you are talking about PR status, the answer to that is also no. If your son is an adult and is eligible to sponsor you, you still have to go through the parental sponsorship route which currently take some times.

2nd cousin cannot help you get PR status. If you have the skills and education requirements, you might be able to apply through express entry.

There's no expedited path to citizenship for you. You would follow the same path as anyone else. Depending on how long you've been away from Canada, your PR status may be in jeopardy. So I would focus on that before worrying about citizenship. You'll most likely need to live in Canada for a few years after returning before you can qualify for citizenship.
