Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding citizenship examination. My cousin has submitted the file for citizenship. She is waiting for AOR. She may have to travel back to home country in few months. She may get an exam invite while she is away. We have below questions:

1. Can she give exam even if she is out of Canada?
2. Is there any thing to keep in mind?
3. Also, if she can't give exam while out of Canada, is there any way to reschedule the exam date?
4. Can she select date herself or does she need to choose from dates provided by IRCC?

TIA

The citizenship test must be taken while physically in Canada — it can't be done from abroad. IRCC gives you a 30-day window to complete it, so there's some flexibility on the exact date within that range.
If she gets the invite while she's away, she can request a reschedule through the IRCC web form before the window expires. They do accommodate reschedules, but it adds a few weeks of delay. The key is to not let the window pass without responding — ignoring it can lead to the file being closed.
Since she's still waiting for AOR, the test invite is likely a few months out. If she can plan her travel around that timeline, that's ideal. She can also check the tracker once AOR arrives to get a rough sense of when the test window might land.

Thank you so much for detailed reply.

If you know, can you please elaborate how reschedule work? That is - Can she let IRCC know about preferred date or will she be given specific date or can IRCC tell her that she can let IRCC know once she is back ?

The information given by @Ash G. Is actually outdated. It used to be an obligation to take the test from Canada, even if inline, but it's not the case anymore. The online test can be taken from anywhere.
Check the "pick a good test location" section in the official page : https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...es/canadian-citizenship/test/online.html#take

The above doesn't apply to oath ceremonies. Even if online, those require to be in Canada. Same (obviously) in case an applicant gets an in-person interview, which may happen, although isn't needed for the vast majority of applicants. So your cousin may still need to alter her travel plans for s quick return to Canada.
Also : let IRCC know for any trip outside the country. This way they can (not will, sometime they just won't!) take the date into account to schedule things only when you're back in the country.

Understood, thank you.

So exam can be taken from anywhere. Just inform IRCC as soon as exam email is received so that there won't be issue.

For oath, she needs to be in Canada

Your welcome.
Good correction by @Seym — I was going off older rules. The online citizenship test can indeed be taken from outside Canada now. That makes things much easier for your cousin.
For the reschedule question specifically: you submit a web form through your IRCC account explaining why you need a new date. You don't get to pick a specific date — IRCC assigns a new window. The key is submitting the request before the original window expires. In practice, most people report getting a new date within 4-8 weeks of the reschedule request.
But given that the test can be taken online from anywhere, she may not even need to reschedule — just make sure she has a quiet room with a stable internet connection wherever she is.

Understood, thanks again.

Before taking exam outside of canada, shouldn't she need to inform IRCC as well that she will be doing that as IP might be out of Canada ?

Good question. As Seym mentioned earlier, it's a good idea to let IRCC know about any travel outside Canada through a web form. That way they have it on file. For the online test itself, IRCC doesn't block foreign IP addresses — the official page just says to pick a quiet location with stable internet. But notifying them about the trip is still smart practice so there are no surprises later, especially when it comes to scheduling the oath ceremony which does require being in Canada.
