Hi all,

I was not sure where it would be best to post this, hopefully this does not cause too much inconvenience. I have recently been laid off temporarily until the corona virus has settled (I work in a restaurant). I have been advised to go on employment insurance because I have accumulated enough hours as a full time employee. I have been a permanent resident for one year, if I apply for EI, does that mean my sponsor is in default of his undertaking to sponsor me and would it also affect my citizenship application in a couple of years.

Thank you for reading.

EI ought to be separate from your sponsor (I assume you mean you became a PR through spousal/common-law sponsorship), so there shouldn't be any issue.

Just apply for EI and see what happens.

EI does not fall on your sponsor to repay. It’s an insurance program you pay into. It won’t put your sponsor in default and won’t affect citizenship.

EI is an insurance scheme. It is not welfare and certainly has no effect on applying for citizenship.
