Dear all,

My wife and I received our ITA a couple of days ago within a day of creating our EE profile. I've got most of my documents ready (barring a few) and had doubts regarding any documentation that might be needed to prove her "change of name".

Her name has changed after marriage i.e. only a change in the last name, not the first name. All her education degrees have her maiden last name whereas the passport has her current last name.

Given that fact that it is only a change of last name post marriage, do I need any affidavits or any other documentation to prove the change of name while uploading the PR application?

I have with me the following -

  • Her passport bio page which clearly lists me as spouse and her parents' names as well (which have the maiden last name)
  • Our marriage certificate

Hi,

I had the same issue with my name and I've just uploaded our marriage certificate together with an explanation that it is the only official document in my country stating the name change.

My app is just at the beginning so I can't say was it enough though. :)

Unsure what your marriage certificate is like but mine has my full maiden name then my husbands full name which clearly shows the same surname as I have now. The document upload page of the app only asked for my passport bio page and my marriage certificate (uk passports do not show spouses name or parents names so my marriage certificate is the only doc that will show my name change and, since it is an official document signed by a registrar, I can't see why they would not accept it)

Our marriage certificate also shows her full maiden name and my full name as well from which it can be easily deduced that my first name has now become her last name. I think that suffices.

I'd say her passport with your name on it and marriage certificate is suffice, but my "trying to be extra careful brain" says, may be get a notarized affidavit that explains the legal name change and upload it along with your application. I think you are from India, if yes, getting it notarized is pretty easy and cheap, so why not!
