Sharing My PRTD Journey (for those looking for timelines)

I wanted to share my PRTD experience since I couldn’t find many recent timelines online — hopefully, this helps someone in a similar situation.

  • Applied (Urgent Basis): 30th August
  • PPR: 2nd September
  • Passport Submitted: 5th September
  • Application Approved: 29th September
  • Ready for Collection: 1st October
  • Passport Collected: 6th October

I applied through VFS Chennai, India, and the passport was stamped at the IRCC Office, Delhi.

Although I applied under urgent basis, I’m not entirely sure if it was actually processed as urgent. My reason for urgency was listed as “Other – Sister’s Engagement.”

Returning to Canada :
24th October

I had to apply for a PRTD because my PR card application was skipped, not rejected.
For context, my eCoPR was issued on 26th June.

I’ve tried to include all the usual FAQs, but feel free to ask if you have any questions — happy to help anyone going through the same process!

I submitted a LOR and my sister's engagement invitation. The rest of the application is pretty straightforward to complete.

Hi,
Thank you for sharing the timeline. Could you please explain the process for Passport submission part. Do I need to book an appointment at VFS or I need to courier the passport by mail?

What seems to be the normal time for PRTD processing?
My case -
PRTD applied (urgent basis - no real way of knowing if it was processed as such though) - 7 Oct 2025
Passport Request - 10 Oct 2025
Passport Submission (at Mumbai VFS) - 13 Oct
Reached VFS Global Delhi office (based on email notification) - 15 Oct

Nothing since then.
Q1. Is it usually the case that if they've asked for the passport, they'll issue the visa? They'd explicitly stated in the letter to not book travel till I got the passport back with the visa stamped - is that to say that they might reject the application?
At what time do I start panicking about this?
Q2. Is there any way to expedite the processing at this point?
Q3. When is I realistically be expecting the PRTD now. I need to tell my employer an estimation of when I'll be back in office

This is not really a PRTD processing issue - it's passport submission and return. My understanding is that it's generally ballpark two weeks but quite a bit of variance (mostly between offices/geographical). Suggest you look for specific threads about how long this takes in India/Delhi office - could be longer there, possibly plus a few days for Mumbai.

You could also see if VFS local has any info on timelines or if there are notification points where VFS or their local delivery service will update you.

And yes, they only ask for the passport - as far as I'm aware - when they have approved, so it was fast approval in your case.

A guess that you could likely share with your employer (with a somewhat substantial buffer so that you don't promise being back too early) is 4-6 weeks after the date of passport submission. I hope that would leave you some room and possibility of pleasant surprise for your employer. But use at your own risk.
