What tight timeline? No schedule of returning to Canada yet.

I saw another post, someone Taiwan got PRTD within a week.

Edit: Also if your itinerary includes a stopover/layover in Detroit / Seattle in USA, you can cross the land border without PRTD.

You can only apply for PRTD from outside Canada.

Option 1 - Wait to get your initial PR card in hand and only then travel outside Canada. If this requires postponing your flights/cancelling and booking new tickets, so be it. Will save you all this trouble and headache. Maybe you'll get lucky and get your PR card in the mail before the 20th.

Option 2 - Go ahead and travel and apply for PRTD from whichever country you are in, once you've decided when you plan to fly back to Canada (I don't know if you need to show proof of your return flight ticket to apply for PRTD - read through the application guide here : https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...permanent-resident-travel-document.html#step1).

Option 3 - Fly back without PRTD to USA (if you have a valid visa or don't require one) and cross the land border to Canada via private vehicle (drive a rental car). You would need a valid drivers license plus your COPR and/or maybe some other proof/document(s) for this, i'm not 100% sure what documents are needed, so do your own research.

Option 4 - Have a trusted family member/friend bring your mailed PR card in person to wherever you are, once it arrives (assuming you know someone who will agree, that lives in Canada, can access your mailbox to collect your card and is willing to travel to where you are) - This is not something i'm 100% sure about, so do your own research.

Current processing time is 61 days for initial PR card to arrive by mail,
this might help you decide what you want to do - https://www.canada.ca/en/immigratio...vices/application/check-processing-times.html

PRTD doesn't have a set processing time - experiences i've heard are anywhere from 10 days to 2 months or more. No guaranteed processing times.

If i were you, i would wait for my PR card in hand and only then travel abroad (i.e. Option 1).
I would prefer to avoid all this hassle and be sure of being able to return.

But ultimately everyone's priorities are different and it's your personal choice. Good luck with whatever you choose.

For Option 3, actually one can just walk across the border (no need to get a private vehicle). For example a person can fly to Buffalo NY, then get a taxi to Rainbow bridge border crossing and then walk across to the Canadian side.

For Option 4, it's doable.
