PRTD extension

Hi Everyone,

My wife is a permanent resident, accompanying me, a Canadian citizen, outside Canada. She satisfies Canadian residency by accompanying me. Her PR card expired almost 2 years ago. Early in 2026, we applied for a PRTD and were given one that expires in Jan 2027. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to go to Canada as planned, and will be unable to by Jan 2027. This was due to work and health issues. We seem to be able to go in March 2027, with the plan being to apply for a PR card from Canada then.

I am wondering, if we are able to request an extension on the PRTD, as opposed to applying for a new one? If not, can she apply for a new PRTD before the current one expires? So there is time for a new one to arrive before March.

Do you know when I can reapply? Could I apply in December (with a still valid PRTD), to give it time to be approved by March?

Would probably apply as soon as possible if you want to travel in March.
