I landed yesterday and the officer explained when I landed to register for healthcare as soon as possible as the 3 month wait period starts after you apply. Looking at the requirements today I saw that you need to have a proof of residence. Since I am not on the lease where we are living at the moment I can't use that as proof. My only proof might be when I open a bank account tomorrow and they send me my cards. Have others used this and is it an acceptable proof of residence? Outside of all that I assume when my SIN card arrives in a few weeks that could be used as a proof of residence? I don't have a cellphone or any other bills in my name here yet.

In AB, it works to get a letter from your bank with your address on it. You can even ask your bank as soon as you open your account to send you a statement or a letter right away.

I do not know the law in Quebec but generally if you break a lease, the landlord can bill you the entire time you have left on the lease. You should rather try to get a month to month contract if possible.

If you do end up with a lease, it would be up to the landlord if they allow you to get out of it or if they allow you to sub-let the apartment or find another person that will take over your lease. See http://www.rdl.gouv.qc.ca/en/publications/ceder.asp
