Proof of Funds

Hello, all,

My questions is about money, as it seems that you must have a minimum amount of money depending on the number of people in your family for the EE.

Let's say my boyfriend lives with his sister and mother, and his father lives with his second family elsewhere. Would this mean that he has TWO family members, and therefore must have a minimum of ~14500 CAD (I can't remember the exact amount)?

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

Family members are defined as spouse and children. If your boyfriend is an unmarried adult (over 19 years), he can only apply for himself. If he and his sister are both under 19 and dependents of their mother, then the mother would have 2 dependents (the family size is 3).

Whether or not proof of funds is required depends on the program/stream - for example, CEC class does not require proof of funds.

Guidelines are posted on the CIC website -

Proof of funds cannot be borrowed. For t his reason, you have to maintain the minimum amount of funds until your application is processed and, and you still have to show proof of funds when you land.

As jes_ON said, the funds cannnot be borrowed. You also cannot release the funds. While CIC is processing your application, they may at any time request additional evidence that you still have the funds (including asking for six months of bank statements to prove the funds are in fact yours and weren't just transferred into your account). You also need to show that you have these funds when you land and become a permanent resident of Canada. So you cannot remove the funds from your account. You need to keep them there if you want to be successfully in immigrating to Canada.
