Hello everyone,

I’ve recently been accepted into a Canadian college and I’m currently preparing my application for a study permit. I have a question regarding the proof of funds requirement.

My brother, who is a Canadian citizen, is willing to financially sponsor me throughout my studies. I will also be living with him during my stay in Canada. He is prepared to provide a signed letter confirming his sponsorship, along with supporting documents such as his bank statements and proof of employment.

The issue is that my own financial status is not sufficient to meet the proof of funds requirement.

My main concern is: Will this arrangement raise concerns for the visa officer that I have an intention to remain in Canada after my studies, since my sponsor is a close relative and I will be staying with him? I want to make sure this will not negatively impact my study permit application.

Any insights or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

How old are you? How long is program? IRCC doesn't have to consider your brother's funds. He can show the funds but you need to include your bank statements too. Living with him and proof of employment are not relevant. IRCC doesn't care if you are living with him. If only his funds then he wants to show considerably more than the $21k plus tuition in cash. He wants to show that not only can he afford your schooling but support himself and spouse/children too.

I am 25 years old, fresh graduate, the program is 1 year. The college asks for 10 K to pay before applying to the study permit and they will provide me a paper that I have paid half of the fees. I have assets in my home country that worth more than the requirements which is a house, I don't know if they accept such proof.

What program and school? What is your education background? Work history? Country of origin? When and how did your brother obtain citizenship?

What school is asking for $10k? Do you have PAL? What is the program? So you are applying for a program and you have no work experience. How are you justifying costs of the program to show career advancement when you return home? You are not a dependant so brother's funds don't have to be considered. Assets are not proof of funds unless you sell the house. Should be taking a Masters or 2 year post grad program. One year program makes no sense.

Many schools do ask for a deposit to prevent students from applying to multiple schools and withdrawing before school starts. It limits applicants to those who are serious about attending the school/program and allows for better planning. After a certain point the seat will likely go unfilled for that start date if the student withdraws. Could mean it is a good school and program that is in demand with limited spots or not a great school/program wanting people to commit.
