PR travel document

Hello everyone,

I am a Doctor currently working in UK and my training period will not be finished until the last year of my entry in Canada with the valid PR card. I am aware that PR extension without living and staying in Canada is not possible. But how and where can I apply for PR travel document stating my reasons for it? Is there any time limit for that too?
Any advice would be highly appreciated.

In applying for a PRTD you will need to show that in the 5 years preceding the application that you meet the residency obligation. If not then the process to revoke your PR status could be started.

Being outside of Canada for education or work purposes are not considered valid reason for not being able to meet the RO given they are personal choices. If can show the RO met at time of application then applying for a PRTD due to being out with an expired card is a valid reason

A PRTD as I understand it will Probably have a limited validity so no point in applying until maybe a few months before you intend to travel back. Always an alternative with an expired card to fly to the US assuming have a visa and enter Canada via the US land border.

No, I am not fulfilling that criteria. My 5 years period will expire in 2023. And I am planning to move to Canada by 2024. In that case, I guess I can’t apply for PRTD then? So what should I do? Why did you apply in the first place knowing you wouldn’t be able to meet your residency obligations? Would first make sure you can actually get a job as a physician in Canada before attempting to return to Canada. Many specialists are not able to find jobs after graduation. Not sure what type of physician you are training to be but a job is not guaranteed in Canada. The chances are better as a GP. Sure your NHS hospital is not aware of your plans and will not be pleased to here that they are training an IMG with no intention of actually staying in the UK.

Your two options are to try and enter via the US border. Training abroad is not an H&C reason. If you are able to get rough without being reported you would need to remain in Canada for 2 years. If you get reported you don’t really have an H&C reason so you could lose your PR and then you would have to reapply. It is up to you whether you want to risk it. If you do get reported you won’t be able to continue working.

I am a GP trainee here and only for your kind information NHS is liberal enough to give equal opportunities to every doctor according to their qualifications and experience only. They are not bothered with their future plans and staying in UK is not definitely a pre requisite of becoming a GP here. In addition, when I had applied for PR, I was not married and after marriage the previous plans and situation change often. I hope you are aware of that too. Thanks for all your advices. But I don’t have any intention to live illegally in any country. I just wanted to know if there is any legal procedure to extend PR or for PRTD. If not, then I will decide if I want to re apply or not. Thanks again for your kind help.

No mention in my post about living illegally in any country. If you are not a UK citizen and you admitted that you had no intention of remaining the UK after your training the NHS would not have offered you a spot. It costs a lot of money to train a doctor so the goal is to retain them or all the money you paid into training them is wasted. PRTD is never t an option in your case because you have not been away from Canada due to circumstances beyond your control like a family member’s serious illness. You would aalso need to be compliant with your RO to sponsor a spouse. It is unclear if your wife is Canadian.

Thanks for your reply. But I think you are using your imagination again and assuming that I would have a wife only as if I am a Male . I can understand you don’t know much about NHS training posts and that’s ok. Lots of doctor go back home or Australia or even Canada from here after training in UK. Couple of my British colleagues has migrated to Australia recently after completing Specialty training. And training post is also like other Physician jobs which is less paid, just for your info. I haven’t asked you for anything about NHS and training as I am already in this system. But I appreciate your knowledge about PR. So I think you should only stick into it and avoid spreading unnecessary informations which you are not asked for. Thanks again.

One more thing, we already got our PR cards and so sponsoring for anyone is no more needed. Thanks a lot for you have tried to cover that bit also. And you have mentioned about US border entry and chance of being reported etc..so I thought that would be illegal living, but it’s ok. No more info I would need I think. I understand. Getting a spot for training in the UK is not dependent on whether you want to stay permanently in the UK or not. NHS do encourage retaining their GP trainees but it is not compulsory. Hi, glad to know you are working in the UK already. I just moved to the UK too 3 months ago from Canada ( after 2 years and 4 months) and working with the NHS. Looking forward to getting into GP training later this year.

Getting a spot for training in the UK is not dependent on whether you want to stay permanently in the UK or not. NHS do encourage retaining their GP trainees but it is not compulsory. A lot of doctors are in the UK for the training and planning to migrate elsewhere or return to their home country.

It is very expensive to train doctors and the UK is in need of doctors so if you are upfront and say that you do not intend to stay a candidate may be chosen over you. You still run into the issue that you will not be able to meet your RO.

Not true bro. UK does not ask that as part of interview nor is it in any written contract/agreement when you start working. I am contributing heavily into the UK economy/NHS working here as a doctor (Trainee). NHS needs my services. What I do after my training is up to me and not the NHS. Doctors are leaving the UK every day after their training for other countries. I know few colleagues who have since completed their training in the UK and moved back to Canada. So get your facts right. Cheers!
