PR sponsoring spouse - I have to be in Canada throughout the entire application?

Might be a stupid question, but being a PR, do I have to physically be in Canada throughout the entire application process or just when my own qualification's being verfied? If the immigration's checking my presence, they're going to call or what? Thanks.

Hi, No you do not have to be in Canada through the entire process, but it is advised not to leave for longer than two or three at a time.

You may leave Canada. It is advised, as Kevin stated, not to leave for longer than 3 weeks to a time and not do it constantly either, while the application is processing. As a Canadian PR you don't have the luxury of going to live in another country while you wait for your spouses' application to complete. You must maintain your residency in Canada, physically living there, until your spouse lands as a PR.

Canada tracks entry/exits from the country. So if CIC is made aware of the fact you are outside of Canada for an extended time (like over 3 weeks), they could simply reject the application based on that.

Yup, keep travel short. I made a lot of trips outside Canada when i was still a PR sponsoring my wife (much of it was traveling to visit her). But the trips were short (usually a weekend) with the longest one being for 10 days.

Your wife is a Canadian citizen, so that is ok. Canadian citizens can sponsor spouses and live anywhere in the world.

The rules are different is the sponsor is only a PR of Canada.
