Hello All,

My wife, daughter (4 years) and I did the COPR landing in June 2019. We have our Canadian PR cards and both work in US on H1b visa.

We had our son born in Feb 2020. We are planning to settle in Canada by Dec 2021 which will give us enough time to establish 2 out of 5 years.

1) How can we get PR card for our son?
2) Can he enter Canada with us on visa exemption (since he was born in the US/has US passport), and once we settle down, we can apply for his PR while we are in Canada?
3) How does the health insurance work out during the time he does not have a PR card?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks so much!

1) You need to submit a sponsorship application once you have moved back to Canada. You cannot sponsor your child for PR while living outside of Canada.
2) Yes.
3) Depends on the province, but generally speaking he will not qualify for health care coverage until he is a PR. You will need to purchase private insurance to cover emergencies and pay anything else out of pocket.

We were in a similar situation, we sponsored our US born son after we moved to Canada and got his PR in 9 months. Our employer had a cheap provincial replacement plan which covered him until we got his PR and healthcare card. If you dont have a employer plan, you will have to buy it privately which may be expensive
