Hi,
We are PR holders and are currently not in Canada. Our son was born in the US as a premature baby and has some medical issues as part of his prematurity. His issues include developmental delays for which he is receiving therapy and improving and hormonal imbalance for which he is receiving hormonal replacement therapy.

As our son was born outside Canada we will need to apply for his PR when we move to Canada. Our question is will his medical condition prevent him from getting his PR? We are not sure if we should consider moving to Canada if our Son is not going to get PR status.

Will be really helpful if someone can shed some light on CICs policies on babies of PR holders who need medical care.

No - his medical issues will not prevent him from getting PR. He is exempt from excessive demand since he's being sponsored as a dependent child through family class. You have nothing to worry about from that regard.

You can sponsor your son once you move back. Excessive demand does not apply for a dependent child.

Depending on which province you move to, you’ll need to be prepared to cover medical expenses until his health care takes effect.

This is a good and important point.

Thanks guys. Just curious why does CIC require a medical report from a doctor then? Or is this not applicable when sponsoring a dependent child

A medical is required for all those immigrating - even those who do not fall under excessive demand. Canada still has to check for communicable disease like TB. If someone has a communicable diseased, this has to be addressed before they will be approved for PR.

Also expect much longer wait times. I am not sure how you would be able to bring your child to Canada as a visitor at this point. The first year or two is critical for therapy and they won't have coverage for 5-13months depending on the province. How is the baby receiving healthcare in the US? It is important that if it comes through the paren’t work that the parent keeps working in the US. Would also add that in cases like this it is important to move to Canada with a job with extended health benefits. Once a baby outpatient many of the therapies, medical devices or medications may not be covered (depends on the province).
