I have been physically present in Canada for more than 730 days during almost 5 years and have met my residency requirement.My PR card expires in Aug.2009.I have recently applied for the PR renewal.I am required to travel urgently on a business trip for apx.10 days .Although my PR card is valid I understand that one must be physically present in Canada while PR renewal is in progress.Please advise any way I can travel. thanks

Call CIC and ask. I am not sure that you have to be physically present the whole time. It took about 3 months when I got mine renewed and if you are not gone for long, it might be ok. I got a letter eventually giving me a date to come to the CIC office to pick up my new PR card so they probably don't want you to miss your date. They only send the first one in the mail, for renewals, you have to pick up yourself.

hi i am new to this forum but i saw this topic and i am in a similar situation, my parent have stayed in canada for more than 2 years in almost 5 years, they got their PR status about 5 years ago, and their PR card would expire in a month, should I send out their application with or without their old PR card? They would need it to return to Canada, if I don't send it then they won't issue the new ones? can I pick up the new cards for them or do they have to be there to get their cards themselves? I may have to start a new thread for it but thanks for help.

They can not renew their PR cards when they are outside Canada. They need to come to Canada to send in the application to renew their PR cards. If the cards are expired, they send them back, if the cards are still valid, they can keep them. CIC will let them know when to pick up their new cards and they will have to go do it themselves.

Thank you Leon! I filled out the " Use of A representative" form or IMM 5476, does it mean that I can pick up the new PR cards for whomever that I represent?

According to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/pr-card/pr-card-faq05.asp they will need to pick it up in person.

Here's info about getting a travel document: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/pr-card/pr-card-faq11.asp

Also, this is from the application guide for a PR card renewal:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/5445E.PDF said:
To be eligible for a PR Card, you must:
• be a permanent resident of Canada;
be physically present in Canada;
• not be under an effective removal order;
• not be a Canadian citizen or a registered Indian under the Indian Act; and
• not be convicted of an offense related to the misuse of a PR card.

Permanent Residents outside of Canada

If you are currently outside Canada and do not have a valid PR Card to return to Canada, you will need to obtain a travel document from a Canadian visa office. An application is available on our Web site at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/travel.asp.
Once you have returned to Canada, you should apply for a PR Card.
