Without knowing how out of compliance they are now and have been it is somewhat tough to comment.

All noted.

And yet: just had card interview, received card for five years, departing for one week only.

I stick with my overall assessment, while noting that yes, I could be wrong.

Up to OP to decide.

Yes, I was more than 500 days short prior to this renewal. Having said, I do not intend to stay out of Canada for long except for short vacations - 1 week. The focus now is to get back in compliance, avoid any renewal and apply for citizenship when the time comes.

In circumstances, would really limit as much as possible - including vacations - if at all possible.

You should take note of how CBSA handles your situation on return.

Don’t think you appreciate how lucky you were getting the new PR card for H&C reasons given it was your choice to study abroad. Will you have been in Canada for 730 days in the past 5 years when you reenter Canada from your vacation? Every time you enter Canada you can be reported for non-compliance no matter how long you were outside Canada.

@ottawaapp you please tell what h&c reason you had and in total how many days you spent in Canada before you applied for PR renewal? Did you have a job ? Did you hire a lawyer? I am in somewhat similar situation and need guidance.

Also what were the timelines? When did you apply with h&c reasons and how much time did it take to get an interview.

It is good that you received renewed PR cards after Interview. But i fail to understand how CIC approved this after interview. You say you are short by more than 500 days in 730 days requirement ? Any questions during interview and how they renewed Cards without meeting 730 days period ?
