The rules have recently changed and you must provide a copy of one of the following along with your application to prove your residence:

- Income Tax assessments issued by Canada Revenue Agency within the past five (5) years, or
- transcripts from a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada verifying attendance within the past five (5) years or
- for all school-aged children, written records verifying attendance within the past five (5) years.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5445ETOC.asp

"If you are unable to provide two secondary identity documents or proof of residence as described above, include a signed and dated statutory declaration clearly explaining the reasons why."

It's always wise to keep copies of your tax assessment for at least 5 years. If you no longer have a copy of your past assessments, contact CRA and ask for one to be mailed to you.

You need to makes sure you have 730 days of physical presence in Canada in the 5 years prior to your application date. You must have conclusive proof of this presence. As per above CIC is de-facto assessing residency as linked closely to if you file taxes.
